Fenty says bike theft his fault

D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty on Monday took "full responsibility" for two bicycles stolen from his home June 3 and said the officer guarding his property followed protocol.

The theft was first reported by The Examiner. Kris Baumann, who heads the local Fraternal Order of Police, said police chief Cathy Lanier had sought to take disciplinary action against Officer Wilson Liriano.

Mafara Hobson, spokeswoman for the mayor, said in an email the officer "didn't do anything wrong" and was not disciplined.

Kris Baumann, who heads the local Fraternal Order of Police, said officers on security detail at the mayor's Crestwood home are hamstrung by a policy that prevents them from going on Fenty's property. He said they are not allowed to leave a nearby guard house, where they watch monitors of camera surveillance. Liriano called police when he saw the thieves, Baumann said.
