Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) said he expects the bill that would legalize same-sex marriage in the District to hit his desk Thursday and will probably hold a bill-signing ceremony Friday.
Fenty said the details have not been worked out, but he will give special recognition of his signature.
The D.C. Council voted 11 to 2 on Tuesday to allow gay couples to marry and to have the same rights as heterosexual married couples. Under Home Rule, the legislation is subject to a congressional review after Fenty signs it.
Gay marriage opponents have been lobbying federal legislators to block the bill. But advocates say they do not expect interference from the Democratic-controlled Senate and House or President Obama.
