FOP endorses Brown for council chair

The Fraternal Order of Police announced Friday that it is supporting Kwame Brown over Vincent Orange in the race for chairman of the D.C. Council.

Kristopher Baumann, chairman of the local FOP lodge, said in a statement that Brown "understands that the government is meant to serve the people no matter where they live in the city."

"If violence is permitted in one section of the District, it places everyone in jeopardy," Baumann said. "Kwame knows this and he will ensure enough resources and police officers are available throughout the city."

The FOP nod caps a good week for Brown, an at-large member of the council, in the endorsement war with Orange.

The editorial page of the Current, an influential group of newspapers that serve Northwest Washington, endorsed Brown this week. The Washington Post has endorsed Orange, a former council member.
