Gist Bids Farewell to OSSE

Before moving on to her new job as the Commissioner of Education for the state of Rhode Island, Deborah A. Gist said farewell to her colleagues at the D.C. Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) in an email.

"It has been a true honor to work with you on the most important issue facing our city--education, and I write to you with affection and appreciation to say goodbye," said Gist, who will not begin her new job until July 1. "It has been a pleasure and a privilege to serve alongside you."

Last week, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty named Kerri L. Briggs to replace Gist as state superintendent of education. Briggs was an assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education at the Department of Education under President George W. Bush's administration.

"The OSSE team is in good hands under the leadership of Dr. Kerri Briggs," Gist said. "I expect to see great things happening in DC in the next year and will watch fondly from Rhode Island to cheer on your accomplishments."

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education is responsible for distributing federal grants and setting academic standards for District schools.
