With the District mayoral race still more than a month away, the dirty tricks and last-minute games that often cloud political campaigns may be getting underway a bit early this year.
D.C. Council chairman Vincent C. Gray, who is challenging Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D), issued a statement Tuesday night saying his campaign telephone numbers "have been hijacked" by someone who is using it to make prank calls.
According to the campaign, the prankster "has masked their telephone identification number with the campaign's number" so residents who receive the call think it is coming from Gray staffers.
"Hundreds of residents have called into the campaign office complaining that someone is contacting them from the campaign and hanging up," the campaign said in a statement.
It is not immediately clear how it's possible -- and with what technology -- for someone to carry out such a scheme, but campaign officials say they have notified the D.C police and Verizon to the situation.
The Gray campaign requests that anyone who receives the call contact Verizon at 1-800-483-6922.
