D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) may have local go-go stars in his camp, but his main opponent, D.C. Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray, has the support of NFL star Vernon Davis.
Davis, a tight end for the San Francisco 49ers, will be hosting a fundraiser for Gray's mayoral campaign Wednesday night at Ozio on M Street.
Davis, who reportedly snagged a 5-year, $23 million contract in 2006, will be appearing in support of "Young Professionals for Gray."
A graduate of Dunbar High School, Gray's alma mater, Davis went on to be a stand out play for the University of Maryland. After three years, he left school and entered the 2006 NFL draft. Davis was the sixth overall pick and, last year, he was selected for the Pro-Bowl.
Davis's little brother, Vontae, was also a star player at Dunbar. A defensive back for Illinois, Vontae Davis entered the NFL draft in 2009. He now plays for the Miami Dolphins.
No word on how Gray knows the Davis family. But Gray's son Carlos, the well-connected head of Young Professionals for Gray, was undoubtedly involved in organizing the event.
