Democratic candidate for mayor Vince Gray greeted voters at Myrtilla Miner Elementary School, his last stop in Ward 6. He said he'd been to more than a dozen polling places in wards 6, 7, and 8 already.
"Today is just about getting out, being at the polls and talking to folks,"
he said, noting large turnouts at New Image Community Baptist Church on Alabama Avenue in Southeast. "There is a steady stream of people voting, which is terrific."
Raymond Banks, a Gray poll worker, said to Gray, "this is your ward from birth. We claim him."
Sandra Gilbert, working the polls for ANC Commissioner Gladys Ann Mack, loudly questioned Gray's commitment to the Rosedale Community Center.
"We're afraid with all of that hard work, our children and our community are going to lose out," said Gilbert, who feared funding for the center's reconstruction would be cut. Gray said he did not have the information on the project and would get back to her.
Necothia "Nikki" Bowens, who is running against Mack, said the project "is still working, but not moving as quickly as we'd like."
A slow, but steady trickle of voters made their way into the school. As of 1:15 p.m., more than 600 people had cast their votes, said Yvonne V. Garner, 81st precinct captain.
Oraneta Davis, 68, said she voted for Gray for mayor and Tommy Wells for council.
"He is always in our neighborhood talking to us. I only know the ones who come around," she said.
Juanita Mason, 33, said she voted for Eleanor Holmes Norton.
"She has helped out a lot with us and been supporting us for many years," Mason said.
