Superior Court Senior Judge Eugene Hamilton ordered the city Wednesday to give D.C. Auditor Deborah K. Nichols "direct, unrestricted access to all documents" involving former quasi-government agencies that were independent but had city-appointed leadership.
They were disbanded more than two years ago, and the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Economic Development took over their deals.
Nichols had served the city with a subpoena for the records but was rejected by Attorney General Peter J. Nickles who said her subpoena was too broad.
Nichols said the administration of Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) frequently blocks her efforts to get information for her investigations so Hamilton's ruling was welcomed. "I'm just happy," she said. "This is a start."
Nickles, however, said he planned to appeal. "We've got some serious issues," he said. "We're going to look to stay this."
