Council member Marion Barry (D-Ward 8) said he is planning a low-key 74th birthday celebration Saturday.
He's had better pre-birthday weeks. His council colleagues on Tuesday unanimously censured Barry, stripped him of his committee chairmanship, kicked him off of another committee and referred public corruption allegations against him to the U.S. Attorney's Office for possible prosecution.
"I'm probably going to have a quiet birthday party," Barry said.
That would differ from Barry's days-long celebrations of the past. Last year, his birthday followed a kidney transplant. He received a warm welcome from colleagues with a sheet cake and balloons. To recognize his 72nd birthday, actress Vivica A. Fox sang to him at Anacostia High School.
"I'm saving the big one for 75," Barry said.
It will be a fundraiser for foundations for scholarships, kidney transplants and leukemia, the cause of death of former wife Effi Barry, he said.
