The campaign of former council member Vincent Orange said late Monday that it is calling for a campaign finance investigation into rival Kwame Brown's "past campaigns."
Orange and Brown, an at-large council member, are competing in next month's Democratic primary contest to succeed Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray in the council's top post.
Orange did not immediately provide details, but said in a press advisory that he would deliver a letter to the Office of Campaign Finance Tuesday morning.
Brown's campaign spokesman James Jones called the move "clearly an act of desperation."
"People are getting tired of negative campaigning," he said, adding that campaign is "fully in compliance with campaign finance laws."
