Quotes From the Vote Over Nickles

One of the most interesting votes in yesterday's fight over the confirmation of Peter J. Nickles as attorney general belongs to At-Large member Kwame R. Brown. The council voted 7 to 5 for Nickles, as Nikita Stewart and Hamil R. Harris report in today's Washington Post.

Brown, however, voted present. Here is Brown's statement, released after yesterday's meeting:

"As a legislator it is my responsibility to make informed decisions for the people of the District of Columbia. I rely on information provided by the Administration to exercise my duties. We need an Attorney General that is objective and respects the Council's authority to access information from government officials. Peter Nickles' legal abilities are unquestionable but it is unacceptable for him to advise officials to disobey Council subpoenas and fail to participate in Council hearings.

Mr. Nickles has assured me that he will no longer advise officials to disregard Council subpoenas and will provide any information necessary to making decisions on behalf of District residents. I look forward to working with him and I believe he has the ability to become an effective Attorney General if he provides objective judgment with the best interests of the people in mind."
