Today is the deadline for local youths to register for the Summer Youth Employment Program, which had major problems last year.
D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, however, has not scaled back. His administration has made it even bigger. He announced today that nearly 24,000 youths are now registered.
Those are the kind of numbers the city hasn't seen since the days when Marion Barry was mayor and started the institution. "Given the current economic conditions, we want to ensure that our youth are given optimal advantages to learn and earn this summer," Fenty said in a release.
