Structural imbalances in the roof at Ballou High, no stage at Anacostia High and bathroom and electrical repairs halted at Eastern High. These are some of the problems that could result if the D.C. Council blocks $8.9 million in reprogrammed funds needed to repair the city's schools, according to a letter from facilities chief Allen Y. Lew to council Chairman Vincent C. Gray.
The letter comes in response to council member Marion Barry's move two weeks ago to introduce a disapproval resolution that would halt the money transfer. If the council does not lift that resolution by the end of the week, the repairs might not get done by the start of school Aug. 25, Lew said. And that, Lew said, would pose a "direct threat to life and safety to teachers and students in those school buildings."
Barry has said he is reacting to Fenty's strongarming of the council in asking them to approve his school repair budget without a public hearing.
