Sobin drops out of mayor's race, backs Gray

The D.C mayoral race now has one less candidate, and Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray (D) has one more supporter.

The eccentric Dennis Sobin, director of the Safe Arts Foundation, announced Friday that he's withdrawing from the race and supporting Gray.

Sobin, always a long shot for the Democratic nomination, said he decided to withdraw after Gray challenged Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) on Thursday to fire Attorney General Peter Nickles.

Sobin said he will instead file to run as an independent in case Fenty beats Gray in the Sept. 14 Democratic primary.

"I am encouraging my many Democratic friends to choose you as their nominee," Sobin said in a letter to Gray. "Today's Post article will help me persuade them that a mayor who surrounds himself by bullies and idiots definitely has to go."

Sobin is an ex-convict who has been involved in a feud with his estranged son, who works as an assistant attorney general in Nickles's office.
