D.C. Council member Mary M. Cheh (D-Ward 3) held a meeting today to get briefed on the theft from the Office of the Chief Technology Officer that has already resulted in the arrests of two city employees and a contractor.
But representatives of the Mayor Adrian M. Fenty administration were no-shows. Cheh was expecting their absence since Attorney General Peter Nickles already said the matter was too sensitive to allow staffers to answer questions at a public hearing.
So Cheh started the meeting and then postponed it, announcing that she will seek subpoena powers to get to the bottom of the latest government scandal.
She was backed by Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray (D), who has been fighting with the administration about transparency since he and Fenty took office in 2007.
