Takoma pool closure plan changes after protests

On Wednesday, the Fenty administration announced that the Takoma Aquatics Center would get a makeover from locker rooms to the pool deck to the baby pools.

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty has pushed throughout his term for new and renovated athletics facilities throughout the city. His campaign literature for the Democratic primary highlights the construction of schools, libraries and recreation facilities.

Great news for Ward 4 residents? Not entirely.

The original plan was to close the pool from Monday, June 21, through Aug. 6. Listservs lit up with complaints. No swimming for the summer?

One parent explained that she signed up her children for camp at the Takoma recreation center because the city had already touted an "aquatics" camp. It was too late to find an alternative, she said.

On Friday, the Department of Parks and Recreation announced that the renovations will be completed in two phases. The second phase, which requires the pool to be closed, will not begin until Sept. 15 - the day after the Democratic primary.
