The Pace Setter

A Monday morning feature in which D.C. Wire charts Mayor Adrian M. Fenty's quest for athletic glory.

The Kinetic Half Ironman, held at Lake Anna State Park in Virginia, is billed as the first half-Ironman distance race of the season in the mid-Atlantic region, meaning a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike and a 13.1-mile run.

Fenty's times Saturday show his strong foundation in running, as he improved his place of finish on each successive leg. His 37-minute, 56-second finish in the swim place him 130th in that category, his 2-hour, 49-minute, 25-second bike put him 85th; and his 1:45:27 run was good for 43rd.

Overall, including transitions, the mayor finished in 5 hours, 18 minutes, 48 seconds, putting him 61st out of the 234 competitors. That continued his trend this year of improving on his times from last year. Fenty's time a year ago was 5:30:16, good for 97th.

The winner this year was Benjamin Bartlett, 21, of Arlington, who finished in 4:19:16.
