A Monday morning feature in which D.C. Wire charts Mayor Adrian M. Fenty's quest for athletic glory.
It's official: Fenty is getting faster as mayor. Last week, he set a personal record in the National Marathon. But we thought maybe that Fenty, who is a much stronger 10-miler than he is a marathoner, might simply have been improving in the longer races as he competed in more of them.
But on Sunday, the mayor showed that he's getting faster in his best distance, too. He completed the Cherry Blossom 10-miler on Sunday in 1 hour 5 minutes 32 seconds -- a 6:34 mile pace -- placing him 46th out of 1,008 in his age group (35 to 39 years old). Overall, the mayor finished 274th out of 5,870. (For the record, Ridouane Harroufi, 26, of Morocco, won in 46 minutes 14 seconds.)
Last year, Fenty finished the Cherry Blossom in 1:08:47, a 6:53 mile pace, meaning he shaved a good 19 seconds off each mile this year. Two years ago, he ran 1:14:54, a 7:35 mile pace. We'll be curious to see how his triathlon times measure up to last year's as soon as that season begins.
