UPDATE: George Hawkins, the respected head of the of the D.C. Department of Environment and a former official at the Environmental Protection Agency, has been chosen as the new general manager at the D.C. Water and Sewer Authority.
The announcement by the authority, at a press conference attended by Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, comes as the agency has been struggling with concerns over lead in the water and the quality of the city's hydrants.
