Vincent Gray changing sites for remaining town halls

The campaign for Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray, the Democratic nominee for mayor, announced Friday that the locations of his remaining town hall meetings would be changed.

The move follows criticism that the campaign was breaking District law that prohibits the use of public resources for partisan political activities. Gray held his first meeting at a charter school in Ward 5 and was scheduled to hold the Ward 2, 6 and 7 town halls in public schools. Earlier in the campaign season before the September primary, candidates were warned about holding events at schools.

Campaign spokeswoman Traci Hughes had said that the principals of the schools had given the campaign permission to use the buildings and that D.C. Public Schools had not weighed in.

But the campaign is now clearly standing down. Tuesday's Ward 7 Town Hall will now be held at Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church. It was previously scheduled for Sousa Middle School.

"We certainly didn't want to distract from the town halls," Hughes said Friday.

The locations of the other town halls are now listed as "TBD."
