A chief booster of the District’s proposed street-car system said Tuesday he’s skeptical of Mayor Vincent C. Gray’s effort to secure private funding for the project.
Earlier Tuesday, the Gray administration issued a Request for Information seeking input from private investors on how a they would finance and manage the proposed $1.5 billion, 37-mile project.

But D.C. Council member Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) said he worries that private investors would lead to higher fares, fewer routes and undermine the character and quality of the city’s public transportation options.
