Wuerl to deliver prayer at Gray's inauguration

Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl will deliver the invocation and benediction at the Jan. 2 inauguration of Mayor-elect Vincent C. Gray.

Wuerl was one of 24 Catholic leaders worldwide elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope Benedict XVI. More than 400 friends and relatives traveled to Rome last month to watch Wuerl, the D.C. archbishop, be made a cardinal.

Gray (D), who is Catholic, has said in previous interviews that he attends mass regularly. During a Washington Post-sponsored debate with Mayor Adrian M. Fenty in September, Gray said he broke with his faith when he voted in favor of legalizing gay marriage in the District.

Cynthia Brock-Smith, secretary of the council and Gray's pick to be Secretary of the District of Columbia, confirmed Wuerl's appearance. Judge Eric T. Washington, chief judge of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, will swear Gray in, she said.
