The National Park Service, at the recommendation of the Federal Highway Administration, will close both curbside lanes and four feet of the adjoining sidewalk across the drawbridge of the Arlington Memorial Bridge prior to Friday morning's rush hour, officials said Thursday. Officials also will post a 10-ton load limit across the entire length of the bridge, which effectively eliminates most bus traffic.
The move comes as the organizer of a contest that offered a $10,000 prize to the best cartoon depicting the prophet Muhammad wanted to have the winning entry displayed in Metro stations and on buses around the D.C. region.
Trains will be up to 15 minutes behind schedule.
The northbound lanes are closed due to police activity.
