Fatal accident closes Route 1 in Mount Vernon

4:55 p.m. Update: One person has died and numerous other people are injured in a multiple vehicle car crash on Route 1 in the Mount Vernon area, Fairfax County police said Monday. The highway is closed in both directions at the scene of the crash.

Fairfax Officer Bud Walker said the crash occurred at 4:02 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Route 1, just prior to the intersection with the Fairfax County Parkway. He had no details on how the crash happened or how many vehicles were involved. He said the gender and age of the person who was killed was not available.

Northbound lanes of Route 1 are completely blocked, Walker said. Southbound traffic is being diverted on to the Fairfax County Parkway. Ambulances were still making their way to the scene at 4:45 p.m.

Orginal post: An accident at Route 1 and the Fairfax County Parkway may tie up traffic in the area, which is already congested with rush-hour traffic, for several hours, according to emergency officials.

Authorities say police and rescue crews are on the scene, and drivers should seek alternate routes.

However, the lack of major surface roads in the area is going to make that difficult, especially if you’re already on the road.
