Capital Bikeshare growing again

(James A. Parcell - FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
Capital Bikeshare will expand to 32 new locations in t he District this fall, growth that city officials say is the first major expansion of the program in the city since it began last September.

The bike-sharing network was founded by Arlington County and the District and has grown to include more than 13,000 members who have access to about 1,100 bikes at 110 stations.

The District Department of Transportation said the growth will help the program keep up with demand. In addition to 32 new locations, Capital Bikeshare will add 265 bicycles to the system and expand the size of 18 existing stations.

“With this expansion we will not only increase the overall reach of the system, but we will expand the program’s capacity by 22 percent in the downtown area, by 80 percent in our East of the River operations and by an average of 38 percent throughout each of the additional wards,” DDOT Director Terry Bellamy said.

Arlington County is planning to expand to an additional 30 stations this fall and next year, and federal funds have been awarded for a pilot program in Rockville and Shady Grove in Montgomery County that would include 20 docking stations.
