Electric vehicle charging stations are gaining ground in the Washington region.
The latest site is Union Station, where public officials and business leaders plan to unveil two charging stations in the parking garage on Thursday morning.
According to Jason Heller, a spokesman for Miami-based Car Charging Group, which installed the equipment, the stations are located on the first and second levels of the garage. There is no fee to charge your electric vehicle, but that will change “in the near future,” he said. Users do have to pay regular garage fees, Heller added.
The Union Station location is not the first site for public access to charging electric vehicles. There are more around the area than you may think.
In April Baltimore-Washington International Marshall Airport debuted eight electric vehicle charging stations on the lower level of the daily garage. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority awarded a contract in May for electric vehicle charging stations at Dulles and Reagan National, and the District Department of Transportation unveiled a curbside charging station at 14th and U Streets last fall.
The Department of Energy also allows you to find the closest EV charging station by entering an address or Zip code in their fueling station locator. According to the DOE, stations are available in the area at the following public locations, many of which are car dealerships:
