Flooding at Reston commuter lot

Heavy rainfall Thursday flooded a commuter parking lot in Reston with some cars submerged in up to 4 feet of water.

Maintenance crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation have been dispatched to the Reston North park and ride lot on Sunset Hills Road.

“Cars are practically floating,” said VDOT spokeswoman Joan Morris. “We’ve got a crew out there and [the water is] very, very deep and I don’t know how much they can do right now.”

Fairfax County officials have provided a bus parked near the lot where commuters can stay dry and make arrangements to be picked up.

The county will also ferry commuters, on an individual basis, to the Reston Town Center transit station, said Merni Fitzgerald, a Fairfax County spokeswoman.
