Getting around Constitution Ave. construction

Once the Cherry Blossom Festival is done in April, the National Park Service project to rebuild Constitution Avenue NW will begin to have a serious impact on commuters. See The Post story by Ashley Halsey III. William Line, spokesman for the park service, points out that the reconstruction will start at 23rd Street and work eastward to 15th Street to separate the avenue project as much as possible from the 17th Street levee project.

The levee project will close some of the lanes of 17th Street, just south of Constitution Avenue, but not at times when Constitution Avenue work is going on, Line said. But by the time the Constitution Avenue work reaches 17th Street, the lane closings needed for the levee project will be done. The project on the avenue is scheduled to be done early in 2012.

The park service thinks the traffic impact will be significant enough this year that it has suggested several alternative routes for avoiding the construction zone.
