Two water main breaks in SE DC could snarl traffic

10:05 A.M. Update:

Water main breaks at two spots in Southeast Washington could cause major traffic problem. Avoid the areas around Suitland Parkway near Stanton Road and the 1800 block of Erie Street.

An accident on eastbound I-66 at the Beltway is blocking the right shoulder. This won’t help the usual congestion in this spot, with delays stretching back to Nutley Street.

I-395 North is remarkably clear approaching the 14th Street Bridge right now.

9:45 A.M. Update:

The accident on westbound Constitution Avenue at 9th Street in Northwest Washington has been cleared, according to the District Department of Transportation.

The vehicle fire on southbound I-270 at Old Georgetown Road has also been cleared from the shoulder.

9:30 A.M. Update:

The vehicle fire on southbound I-270 is now only blocking one northbound shoulder and one southbound shoulder at Old Georgetown Road.

9:25 A.M. Update:

The accident we mentioned earlier is on westbound Constitution Avenue at 9th Street in Northwest Washington. Expect traffic issues.

9:20 A.M. Update:

The vehicle fire on southbound I-270 near Old Georgetown Road is blocking two southbound lanes and one of the northbound lanes. Expect big delays approaching this spot.

9:15 A.M. Update:

An accident at 9th Street and Constitution Avenue in Northwest Washington could cause headaches there.

9:10 A.M. Update:

There’s a vehicle fire reported on southbound I-270 near Old Georgetown Road, so expect to see some traffic issues in that spot.

8:50 A.M. Update:

The inner loop is a hideous mess approaching I-66 right now. Traffic is inching along, but I wouldn’t recommend heading that way any time soon.

This morning’s delays on I-66 East seem to begin after Chain Bridge Road.

There is congestion on I-395 North at the 14th Street Bridge, but it actually doesn’t stretch back as far as it normally would at this time of the morning rush. The problems really only crop up as you approach the bridge, and even though there’s congestion, traffic is moving.

8:30 A.M. Update:

There’s also a water main break on the Suitland Parkway near Stanton Road in Southeast Washington. Expect traffic issues near this spot as well.

8:15 A.M. Update:

A water main break at 1807 Erie Street in Southeast Washington is causing multiple street closures. Northbound 18th Place and Erie Street, southbound 17th Place and Erie Street and eastbound Erie and 18th streets are all blocked, according to the District Department of Transportation.

This is all adjacent to Fort Stanton Park, so if you normally use Erie Street/Morris Road, try heading north to Good Hope Road.

8:05 A.M. Update:

The accident on I-395 North at Duke Street has been cleared and the lanes reopened. There’s still congestion around that area, so expect to hit some delays.

Original Post:

Good morning, commuters! We’ll be keeping tabs on any headaches, issues or problems we hear about on the roads this morning. Make sure to tell us about anything you see out there — either in the comments below or via Twitter (@DrGridlock).

An accident on I-395 North at Duke Street is blocking the left lane and left shoulder. Delays stretch back to the Sprngfield Interchange.

The outer loop of the Beltway is very, very slow around University Boulevard right now.

Southbound Georgia Avenue is very congested in Wheaton-Glenmont.
