Water main break at Connecticut Ave. and N St. blocking lanes, expect major delays around Dupont

8:30 A.M. Update:

The water main break/sinkhole at Connecticut Avenue and N Street NW continues to block streets around Dupont Circle.

Southbound Connecticut Avenue remains closed between R and N streets, while westbound N Street is closed at Connecticut Avenue. Avoid the area and expect major delays if you are anywhere close to these roads.

This has also created detours for several Metrobuses:

— Eastbound N2 and N4 buses are detouring at 20th Street and Connecticut Avenue and resuming their regular routes at 17th and K streets.

— Southbound 42 and 43 buses are also detouring at 20th Street and Connecticut Avenue and resuming regular routes at 17th and K streets.

Meanwhile, a memorial service for Chuck Brown will take place later today at the convention center. L Street is closed in both directions between 7th and 9th streets and it isn’t scheduled to reopen until 6 p.m. Expect delays around that area as well.

8:25 A.M. Update:

Marlboro Pike has reopened between Donnell and Lorring drives in Forestville following an accident investigation.

8:10 A.M. Update:

The water main break/sinkhole at Connecticut Avenue and N Street NW is still blocking streets and causing major issues around Dupont Circle. Southbound Connecticut Avenue is blocked between R and N streets, which is still the biggest problem; this is going to cause major backups for southbound traffic and lead to headaches on many surrounding roads. Try to avoid the area, if you can help it, or at least stay several blocks away from Connecticut Avenue.

8:05 A.M. Update:

A cyclist was hit by a vehicle at Arkansas Avenue and Webster Street NW, but they are conscious and breathing, according to the D.C. police.

7:50 A.M. Update:

A shooting in the 800 block of Burns Street SE could cause delays, so avoid that area if possible.

7:30 A.M. Update:

We have updated street closures around the water main break/sinkhole at Connecticut Avenue and N Street NW:

— Westbound N Street is closed at Connecticut Avenue

— Southbound Connecticut Avenue is closed between N and R streets

This major stretch of Connecticut Avenue also includes Dupont Circle, which is undoubtedly going to lead to traffic problems in the area. You won’t be able to head from the circle to Connecticut Avenue, so if you normally head that way you have to get off on another street and head north or south and reconnect with Connecticut Avenue away from the closures.

7:15 A.M. Update:

We have more on the fatal accident that has shut down Marlboro Pike between Donnell and Lorring drives in Forestville over at Crime Scene.

And don’t forget: The public memorial service for Chuck Brown is scheduled for later today at the convention center. As a result, L Street is closed in both directions between 7th and 9th streets. It isn’t scheduled to reopen until 6 p.m.

6:55 A.M. Update:

The following streets are closed as a result of the water main break/sinkhole at Connecticut Avenue and N Street NW, according to D.C. police:

— Southbound Connecticut Avenue and R Street NW

— Southbound Dupont Circle at Connecticut Avenue NW

— Westbound N Street and Connecticut Avenue NW

6:35 A.M. Update:

Watch out for major delays stemming from a water main break on Connecticut Avenue at N Street NW. N Street is blocked in both directions, as are two lanes on Connecticut Avenue between N and M Streets.

MARC riders: The Edgewood station’s ticket office is not open due to an issue with the electronic door locks. Tickets can be purchased on trains with cash only.

Also, the bathroom will not be available on MARC Brunswick Line train 878. (They do expect that same train’s restroom to be available for the evening commute.)

6:30 A.M. Update:

All eastbound lanes have reopened on I-66 at the Beltway. Major delays remain, so expect headaches going this way to last for a while.

Marlboro Pike is shut down between Donnell and Lorring drives in Forestville due to an accident investigation. Use Pennsylvania Avenue instead.

Original Post:

Good morning, commuters! We’ll be keeping an eye on the roads and rails this morning, reporting any delays or issues — and we will need your help. If you hear about any congestion, delays, problems or anything at all, tell us in the comments section below or by tweeting @drgridlock.

May ends with a breezy, warm and pleasant day, according to the Capital Weather Gang. June begins tomorrow with lots of rain, so enjoy this while you can.

So far:

— An accident on I-66 East at the Beltway is blocking the left two lanes. Traffic is getting by in the right lanes, but there are already major delays.

— VRE Fredericksburg train 302 is having equipment problems and is stopped south of the Fredericksburg station. Train 304 will pick up passengers waiting for both trains 302 and 304, so you should expect over-crowded conditions on train 304.

VRE riders could instead wait for train 306, which leaves at 6:05 a.m. Also an option: Metro. The Metro option has been opened, so just show your VRE ticket to a station manager.
