I-66 West reopens after major accident

8:50 A.M. Update:

An accident at 13th and U streets in Northwest could cause headaches there, whle an accident on 11th Street at I (Eye) Street in Southeast could also slow traffic at that spot. And there’s also an accident at New York and Florida avenues in Northeast.

There’s a vehicle fire on the outer loop of the Beltway at Connecticut Avenue.

8:10 A.M. Update:

The accident on northbound I-295 at Howard Street/Firth Sterling in Southeast Washington has been cleared.

7:50 A.M. Update:

An accident on northbound MD-295/B.W. Parkway is blocking one lane at Good Luck Road.

There’s also an accident on 4th Street at Rhode Island Avenue in Northwest Washington.

Traffic on I-66 West appears to have eased considerably since the lanes reopened.

I-66 East is still backed up approaching the Beltway and Chain Bridge Road.

7:10 A.M. Update:

There are downed wires in an incident involving a tractor trailer on D Street near 9th Street in Southwest, according to D.C. Fire. A traffic signal and pole fell on top of the tractor trailer, and while there are no reported injuries, it will take time to clear this up.

7:05 A.M. Update:

All lanes have reopened on I-66 West at Sycamore Street, but considerable backups remain approaching this spot.

There’s also congestion on I-66 East at Chain Bridge Road and again at the Beltway as well as delays on I-95 North at the Springfield Interchange.

An accident on northbound I-295 near Howard Road in Southeast is causing some traffic headaches right now.

6:46 A.M. Update:

Lanes have reopened on I-66 West

6:18 A.M. Update:

The left lane has reopened on I-66 West at Sycamore Street. The backups remain approaching this spot and the detour is still in place.

Original Post:

Good morning, commuters.

An accident on westbound I-66 at Sycamore Street is blocking all lanes and both of the shoulders. Westbound I-66 is very backed up at this spot, so try to avoid it if you can. There is a detour from I-66 West onto Glebe Road; turn left onto Fairfax Drive, right onto Washington Boulevard and get back onto I-66 West.

We’ll be keeping tabs on the commute all morning, rounding up any headaches, issues or problems we hear about. Let us know anything you see out there — tell us in the comments below or via Twitter (@DrGridlock).
