Metro: Man fell down Rosslyn escalator after allegedly drinking

Metro officials said a man fell down an escalator at Rosslyn station Friday evening after “having several alcoholic beverages.”

His name was not released.

The man apparently was trying to sit “on the railing prior to the incident” and fell, said Dan Stessel, Metro’s chief spokesman. The man was taken to George Washington University Hospital, he said.

The incident occurred about 6:44 p.m. and there was one witness to the incident, Stessel said.

The witness told authorities “the man placed himself on the metal panel between two escalator units and subsequently fell an unknown distance down the ascending escalator,” he said.

The escalator was in service at the time of the incident, Stessel added.

How did Metro know the Rosslyn escalator man had been drinking?

“The injured party said as much to transit police at the hospital,” Stessel wrote in an e-mail.
Metro spokeswoman Cathy Asato said Monday that the man had been treated and released.
