Major outer loop delays due to earlier accident

5:40 p.m. Update: The outer loop has reopened, but drivers can expect major delays. According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, backups extend about 6 miles.

5:04 p.m. Update: Traffic services report that the right lane is open. However, traffic is extremely congested and cameras show most lanes are at a standstill.

5 p.m. Update: Metro reports that buses servicing King Street station are running up to 25 minutes late due to an accident near the Beltway and Telegraph Road.

4:50 p.m. Update: The outer loop is closed near Telegraph Road in Virginia due to an accident involving a tractor-trailer. There are also delays on the inner loop due to gawkers.

Alternate routes include Interstate 395 and circling the inner loop of the Beltway. Delays currently extend to I-395.

4:25 p.m. Update: The installation of the backup power at Dupont Circle has been completed and power has been restored to the signals at the intersection.

11:25 A.M. Update:

All roads have reopened around 11th and U Streets NW, according to D.C. police.

10:15 A.M. Update:

The bicyclist is being treated for life-threatening injuries, according to DC  Fire & EMS.

9:10 A.M. Update: U Street is closed from 10th to 11th streets NW following an accident involving a bicyclist and a vehicle. The investigation is underway.

9:05 A.M. Update:

Remember: The Dupont Circle traffic signals are going dark for several hours beginning at 10 a.m. for system upgrades. Traffic control officers will be on the scene, but there could still be delays for drivers. Avoid that area if you can help it.

9 A.M. Update:

The 1000 and 1100 blocks of U Street NW are closed in both directions after a pedestrian was struck in the 1100 block, according to D.C. police.

The accident on the outer loop of the Beltway at University Boulevard is has been cleared and the outer loop lane and shoulder reopened.

The accident on the inner loop of the Beltway at Rockville Pike has been cleared from the shoulder.

The accident on westbound U.S. 50 at Martin Luther King Jr. Highway/MD 704 has also been cleared from the shoulder.

8:35 A.M. Update:

An accident on the inner loop of the Beltway at Rockville Pike is blocking one of the shoulders.

An accident on the outer loop of the Beltway at University Boulevard is blocking one outer loop lane and one of the shoulders.

The accident on westbound U.S. 50 at Martin Luther King Jr. Highway/MD 704 is blocking one of the shoulders.

A disabled vehicle on westbound I-66 at Chain Bridge Road is blocking the right shoulder.

Northbound DC 295 is slow approaching the 11th Street split, according to D.C. police.

8:15 A.M. Update:

All lanes are now open on Suitland Parkway at Firth Sterling Avenue SE, according to police. The pedestrian was taken to the hospital and her injuries are not life threatening.

8:10 A.M. Update:

A pedestrian was struck on Suitland Parkway at Firth Sterling Avenue SE, according to D.C. police. Only one outbound lane is now blocked.

8:05 A.M. Update:

All outbound Suitland Parkway lanes are blocked at Firth Sterling Avenue SE due to police activity.

An accident on westbound U.S. 50 at Martin Luther King Jr. Highway/MD 704 could cause delays there.

7:50 A.M. Update:

The accident on eastbound I-66 after Sycamore Street is still blocking the right shoulder.

7:25 A.M. Update:

The usual trouble spots are starting to cause problems in Northern Virginia:

— The inner loop of the Beltway is slow before I-66.

— I-395 North is starting to clog before the 14th Street Bridge.

— Eastbound I-66 is very congested before Chain Bridge Road.

7:05 A.M. Update:

An accident on eastbound I-66 after Sycamore Street is blocking the right shoulder.

Today’s forecast calls for a breezier, cooler day than yesterday, according to the Capital Weather Gang.

An important note for later in the morning: The Dupont Circle traffic signals are going dark for several hours beginning at 10 a.m. for system upgrades. Traffic control officers will be on the scene, but there could still be delays for drivers. Avoid that area later in the morning.
