M Street snarled in Georgetown

9:05 A.M. Update:

Eastbound M Street has fully reopened, but there are very heavy backups on the roadway through the heart of Georgetown. We’d recommend using a side road like K, P or Q streets instead.

Traffic is also moving on westbound M Street, but there are also significant delays.

The police remain on the scene investigating last night’s shooting.

8:55 A.M. Update:

The detour from eastbound M Street onto northbound 29th Street has been lifted. Some traffic appears to be moving again westbound onto M Street, though police are still on the scene in the far right lane.

8:40 A.M. Update:

M Street is now being closed or diverted in both directions as police investigate last night’s shooting in Georgetown. The 2700 and 2800 blocks of M Street are essentially closed in both directions, according to police. The westbound stretch is closed, while eastbound traffic is being diverted to northbound 29th Street.

This is due to the ongoing police investigation, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. There is no timetable available yet for when the streets might reopen.

If you wind up on eastbound M Street and hit this detour, just take 29th Street north to Q Street and keep heading east from there. You can take 22nd Street south and get back on M Street. If you’re heading west, stick to K, P or Q streets, but expect heavy delays.

8:20 A.M. Update:

The police car that had been blocking the westbound 2800 block of M Street has now moved to the eastbound side. Traffic heading east on M Street to Pennsylvania Avenue appears to be diverted to the left on 29th Street. We’re reaching out to the police and will have more information shortly.

8:10 A.M. Update:

The accident on Muncaster Mill Road/MD 115 at Bowie Mill Road is has been cleared and all lanes reopened.

The earlier accident on the inner loop of the Beltway at the Dulles Toll Road is still blocking the left shoulder and left lane.

7:45 A.M. Update:

The accident on Dumfries Road/VA 234 at Exeter Drive in Montclair has been cleared and all lanes reopened.

An accident on the inner loop of the Beltway before the Dulles Toll Road is blocking the left shoulder.

A disabled vehicle on the inner loop of the Beltway at Braddock Road is blocking the right shoulder.

7:25 A.M. Update:

The 2800 block of M Street NW remains blocked in Georgetown as police investigate a shooting there last night. This is going to snarl traffic heading west on M Street and Pennsylvania Avenue as the morning commute picks up. You can head west on M Street if you get on it west of this spot. Eastbound traffic is moving smoothly right now.

A disabled vehicle on I-66 East at the Beltway is blocking the right shoulder.

An accident on Muncaster Mill Road/MD 115 at Bowie Mill Road is blocking both lanes.

7:05 A.M. Update:

An accident on the inner loop of the Beltway at the Dulles Toll Road is blocking the left shoulder and left lane.

An accident on Dumfries Road/VA 234 at Exeter Drive in Montclair is blocking all northbound lanes and the south left outside lane.

6:35 A.M. Update:

The accident on I-270 North at the exit for Falls Road has been cleared from the shoulder.

The inner loop of the Beltway is starting to slow down around Gallows Road.

6:20 A.M. Update:

Police are still on the scene of the shooting in the 2800 block of M Street NW in Georgetown last night, one of at least six people shot last night. The westbound 2800 block of M Street NW is closed and could remain closed through the morning rush hour.

This is undoubtedly going to snarl traffic that would normally take Pennsylvania Avenue and M Street west into Georgetown. Police cars are blocking all westbound lanes at 28th Street, though eastbound traffic appears to be moving smoothly.

If you normally take Pennsylvania Avenue or M Street into Gerogetown, you should consider taking K Street instead. Just follow it westbound, under the Washington Circle, and follow it right under the Whitehurst Freeway. You could also head north and take P or Q streets into Georgetown instead.

Word of warning: If the roadway does indeed remain blocked through the morning rush, it will snarl traffic on Pennsylvania Avenue and M Street as well as the alternate routes we suggested. Try to delay your commute, if possible, because otherwise you will be sitting in some heavy traffic.

Original Post:

Good morning, commuters! November begins with a chilly, cloudy morning, followed by a slightly warmer and sunnier afternoon, according to the Capital Weather Gang. We’ll be keeping an eye on the roads and rails this morning, reporting any delays or issues — and we will need your help: If you hear about any congestion, delays, problems or anything at all, tell us in the comments section below or by tweeting @drgridlock.

Remember, a statue unveiling at Reagan National Airport today will snarl traffic from 11 a.m. to noon. Don’t drive there during that time if you can avoid it.

So far:

— An accident on eastbound I-66 just inside the Beltway is blocking the right shoulder.

— A disabled vehicle on eastbound I-66 at the Fairfax County Parkway is blocking the right shoulder.

— I-95 North is backed up approaching Woodbridge.

— An accident on I-270 North at the exit for Falls Road is blocking one of the shoulders.
