Rainy day causing slow, soggy commute

10:25 A.M. Update: Police are reporting an overturned vehicle on 295 southbound at Laboratory Road.

10 A.M. Update: D.C police report that a sink hole has developed at Military Road and Beach Drivve NW. Drivers are asked to avoid the area.

Also we’ve had reports of standing water at Connecticut Avenue and Devonsire Place NW. Remember never drive through standing water, especially when you can’t tell how deep it is.

8:35 A.M. Update:

It’s been an ugly, slow, wet commute so far this morning. If you have the option to telecommute, this would be the day to take advantage of it.

But if you still have to head out, expect to encounter major delays. There have been multiple accidents and lane closures this morning, causing congestion in some spots and exacerbating existing delays in other areas.

Multiple key arteries are moving at a crawl, including:

— Both directions of the Beltway around the American Legion Bridge

— The inner loop of the Beltway from Braddock Road to I-66

— The outer loop of the Beltway is jammed up around Colesville Road

— I-270 South is a mess from the spur back to Clarksburg

— I-395 North is essentially snarled from the 14th Street Bridge back to the Beltway

— I-95 North is jammed up around Newington, and delays stretch back as far as Dumfries and Triangle

— Eastbound I-66 approaching the Beltway

— Westbound I-66, also approaching the Beltway

— Traffic is inching along on South Capitol Street towards the northbound Douglass Bridge

8:28 A.M. Update:

The accident on I-395 South near Washington Boulevard is still blocking the left lane and left shoulder.

The disabled vehicle on the outer loop of the Beltway at the Dulles Toll Road has been cleared from the right center lane.

An accident on southbound I-295 at Howard Road SE could cause delays for southbound travelers.

Watch out for delays stemming from an accident at 13th Street and Florida Avenue NW.

An accident has been reported on the outer loop of the Beltway at Central Avenue.

8:20 A.M. Update:

An accident at 34th and Fulton streets NW could slow traffic around that spot.

8:12 A.M. Update:

An accident on the westbound Dulles Toll Road is blocking the two right lanes before the Wolf Trap exit, a reader reports.

8:10 A.M. Update:

The accident on I-270 South after Clarksburg Road has been cleared from the shoulder.

Traffic signals are reportedly flashing at Reno Road and Van Ness Street NW.

8 A.M. Update:

An accident on I-395 South near Washington Boulevard is blocking the left lane and left shoulder.

The accident involving a tractor trailer on I-95 South in Dale City is now only blocking the right shoulder.

A disabled vehicle on the outer loop of the Beltway at the Dulles Toll Road is blocking the right center lane.

The accident on I-270 South after Clarksburg Road is now only blocking one of the shoulders.

7:50 A.M. Update:

An accident on First Street and New York Avenue NE is slowing traffic, according to D.C. police.

An accident on I-270 South after Clarksburg Road is blocking one lane and one of the shoulders.

The accident on I-95 North at the Allentown Road has been cleared and the lanes reopened.

7:40 A.M. Update:

An accident involving a tractor trailer on I-95 South in Dale City is blocking the left two lanes. There is already considerable congestion heading that way from the Beltway, so expect this to exacerbate delays approaching this spot.

7:32 A.M. Update:

An accident on I-95 North at the Allentown Road exit is blocking two lanes and one of the shoulders.

7:25 A.M. Update:

An accident on 7th and D streets SW is blocking the middle lane, according to D.C. police. It’s unclear which direction, so just expect delays and avoid this intersection.

7:20 A.M. Update:

The accident on the inner loop of the Beltway at the Little River Turnpike has been moved to the right shoulder.

An accident on eastbound I-66 at Chain Bridge Road is blocking the right shoulder. This is smack in the middle of heavy delays approaching the Beltway.

7:05 A.M. Update:

The accident on eastbound U.S. 50 at the exit for Martin Luther King Jr. Highway/MD 704 has been cleared and the lanes reopened.

The accident on I-395 South at Washington Boulevard has also been cleared and the lanes reopened.

And the accident on I-395 North at Seminary Road has also been cleared and those lanes reopened.

Even with those lanes reopening on I-395 North, it’s still crawling as you approach Seminary Road from the Beltway. And it’s also a very slow slog from Washington Boulevard to the 14th Street Bridge.

An accident on the inner loop of the Beltway at the Little River Turnpike is blocking the right center lane.

6:50 A.M. Update:

An accident on eastbound U.S. 50 at the exit for Martin Luther King Jr. Highway/MD 704 is blocking two lanes and one of the shoulders.

6:45 A.M. Update:

Northbound I-395 remains incredibly backed up from the 14th Street Bridge back to Washington Boulevard. There are also extremely heavy delays from Duke Street back to the Beltway.

An accident at 14th and H streets NW could cause problems there, according to the D.C. police.

An accident on the inner loop of the Beltway at Bald Eagle Road is blocking one of the shoulders and could cause delays.

6:40 A.M. Update:

Accidents have been reported at 18th and Evarts streets NE and 10th and Taylor streets NE.

6:27 A.M. Update:

An accident at 7th and K streets NW is slowing traffic there, according to D.C. police.

Even though the accident on eastbound I-66 before the Beltway has been moved to the shoulder, there are still very heavy delays on this roadway.

6:18 A.M. Update:

The accident on I-395 North close to the 14th Street Bridge has been cleared. But northbound traffic is still moving very, very slowly at the 14th Street Bridge.

The accident on eastbound I-66 before the Beltway has been moved to the shoulder.

6:07 A.M. Update:

The accident on I-395 North at Seminary Road is now blocking the right two lanes and the right shoulder.

Original Post:

Good morning, commuters! We’ll be keeping an eye on the roads and rails this morning, reporting any delays or issues — and we will need your help: If you hear about any congestion, delays, problems or anything at all, tell us in the comments section below or by tweeting @drgridlock.

It’s going to be a wet, sluggish morning commute, with heavy rain likely in the early-to-mid morning period, according to the Capital Weather Gangx. The rain will persist into the evening, so prepare yourselves for a slow, soggy day. A Flood Watch goes into effect at 1 p.m. and lasts through the evening.

And a midday march through part of downtown Washington could cause traffic problems as early as 11 a.m., with additional marches lasting into the evening rush.

So far:

— An accident on eastbound I-66 before the Beltway is blocking the left center lane.

— An accident on the inner loop of the Beltway at Telegraph Road was blocking two lanes, but now it’s just blocking the shoulder.

— An accident on I-395 North at Seminary Road is blocking the right lane and right shoulder.

— Another accident on I-395 North close to the 14th Street Bridge is blocking the right lane.

— An accident on I-395 South at Washington Boulevard is blocking the left two lanes.
