Afternoon update: Dulles Greenway lanes reopen

3:15 P.M. Update:

The Dulles Greenway has fully reopened. All lanes were opened at 2:11 p.m., according to the Virginia State Police. The driver remains at the hospital for treatment of his serious and non-life-threatening injuries.

The tanker truck that overturned was carrying about 7,000 gallons of diesel fuel when the truck overturned, police say.

9:30 A.M. Update:

The westbound Dulles Greenway remains partially closed at Shreve Mill Road due to the tanker truck that overturned and caught fire there earlier this morning.

The westbound right lanes are closed, so traffic can only get by on the left. The eastbound left shoulder is also closed, and you should expect some delays on that side as people slow down to see what’s happening. Police expect the westbound lanes to remain closed until at least 11 a.m.

A tanker truck on the westbound Dulles Greenway at the Claiborne Parkway exit overturned and caught fire before 5:30 a.m. this morning, according to the Virginia State Police. Authorities are still investigating the scene. The driver was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries.

A disabled vehicle on the inner loop of the Beltway at the Old Georgetown Road exit is blocking the right off-ramp.

Tree maintenance on Beach Drive will close a chunk of the roadway yet again. Beach Drive will be closed between West Beach Drive NW to the Maryland/D.C. border. The closure will occur from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

9:10 A.M. Update:

An accident on southbound I-395 at Ohio Drive is blocking one lane.

8:45 A.M. Update:

The accident on eastbound I-66 at Chain Bridge Road has been cleared.

8:35 A.M. Update:

An accident on eastbound I-66 at Chain Bridge Road could create delays there.

8:30 A.M. Update:

MARC train 894 is running about 10 minutes behind schedule.

8:10 A.M. Update:

The westbound Dulles Greenway remains closed at Shreve Mill Road due to the tanker truck that overturned and caught fire. The eastbound left shoulder is also still closed, with potential delays on that side due to people slowing down to see what’s happening.

8:07 A.M. Update:

Metro reports that normal service has resumed on the Red Line. As always, watch for any lingering delays or potential crowding at stations where loads of people wound up waiting due to the delays.

7:55 A.M. Update:

Metro reports that the Red Line single-tracking has cleared between Wheaton and Glenmont. But residual delays remain, so expect to encounter waits and crowding to be a lingering problem.

7:45 A.M. Update:

The westbound Dulles Greenway remains closed at Shreve Mill Road due to the tanker truck that overturned and caught fire. The eastbound lanes have reopened, though the left shoulder is still blocked.

7:40 A.M. Update:

There are still delays on the Red Line due to single-tracking between Glenmont and Wheaton. Some Red Line trains are turning around at Wheaton, and Metro warns riders to expect delays of at least 10 to 15 minutes. (Emphasis on “at least.”)

Metro crews found a track problem between Glenmont and Wheaton overnight, and crews continue working on the tracks to repair the problem, according to Metro. The single-tracking will continue until the crews have finished this. If you’re a Red Line rider, be ready for delays and potential crowding at stations.

7:20 A.M. Update:

All lanes have reopened on the inner loop of the Beltway at Pennsylvania Avenue. Heavy delays still remain approaching this spot.

7:05 A.M. Update:

A tanker truck overturned and caught fire on the westbound Dulles Greenway at the exit for Claiborne Parkway earlier this morning, temporarily closing the roadway in both directions.

The Virginia State Police were called to the scene at 5:27 a.m. The driver of the truck was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospita with serious but not life threatening injuries, according to police.

The eastbound lanes have reopened, while the westbound Dulles Greenway lanes remains blocked. A lane is opening shortly, police say.

7 A.M. Update:

The accident on the inner loop of the Beltway at Pennsylvania Avenue is still blocking the left lane. The right three lanes have reopened and there are heavy delays.

Red Line trains are still single-tracking between Wheaton and Glenmont due to that track problem near Glenmont. Prepare for delays in both directions.

The westbound Dulles Greenway remains closed at Shreve Mill Road due to an accident involving a tractor trailer. The eastbound lanes have reopened.

6:50 A.M. Update:

An accident on the inner loop of the Beltway at Pennsylvania Avenue is blocking the two left lanes. The right lanes are still open, but delays are heavy.

6:32 A.M. Update:

Red Line trains are single-tracking between Wheaton and Glenmont due to that track problem near Glenmont. Prepare for delays in both directions.

6:30 A.M. Update:

The westbound Dulles Greenway remains closed at Shreve Mill Road due to an accident involving a tractor trailer. The eastbound lanes have reopened.

An accident involving a tractor trailer on I-66 East at Chain Bridge Road is blocking the right shoulder.

6:25 A.M. Update:

Trains are single-tracking on the Red Line between Wheaton and Glenmont due to a track problem near Glenmont.

Normal Red Line service has resumed again between Gallery Place and Dupont Circle, though watch for any lingering delays or crowding in that stretch.

6:04 A.M. Update:

There are still residual delays on the Red Line in both directions due to the earlier medical emergency at Gallery Place.

— The Dulles Greenway is closed in both directions at Shreve Mill Road due to an accident, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s office.

— Also, tree maintenance on Beach Drive will close a chunk of the roadway this week. Beach Drive will be closed between West Beach Drive NW to the Maryland/D.C. border. The closure will occur from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
