Road work begins on New Hampshire Ave.

Road work may slow down drivers traveling on New Hampshire Avenue at Adelphi Road in Silver Spring.

The Maryland State Highway Administration recently began a $1.3 million project to widen New Hampshire and create an additional through lane at the intersection.

Watch for single lane closures on New Hampshire Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. There may be additional lane closures over night, especially as the work nears completion in spring 2012.

State officials said the project will also include:

• Grinding and resurfacing the road.

• Improving drainage.

• Installing new signs, pavement markings, guardrails and landscaping.

• Upgrading sidewalks and ramps.

• Replacing curbs and gutters.
