Section of Zion Drive in Fairfax to close

Beginning Wednesday a section of Zion Drive in the Fairfax area will close for safety upgrades.

The stretch between Windsor Hills Drive and Jib Lane will remain closed for about three months. During that time, all through traffic will be detoured. Westbound traffic from Guinea Road will be detoured to Roberts Road, and eastbound through traffic from Ox Road (Route 123) will be detoured to Roberts Road and Guinea Road.

Access will only be provided to the residential communities along Zion, as well as the Greater Little Zion Baptist Church and the David R. Pinn Community Center.

Lanes are expected to reopen by Sept. 2, however, construction will last about a year.

Zion Drive will be realigned to mitigate a dangerous curve between Windsor Hills Drive and Jib Lane. The work will also include construction of pedestrian walkways on both sides of Zion.

The $1.4 million project is being funded from a November 2007 Transportation Bond referendum in Fairfax County. The project is being managed by the the county’s transportation department and the department of public works and environmental services.
