Truck driver charged with reckless driving in I-66 crash

10:35 A.M. Update:

The driver of a tractor-trailer hauling plumbing materials was charged with reckless driving after his truck lost control while exiting from the Capital Beltway onto Interstate 66 West, Virginia State Police said.

James Hawkins, of Clinton, was not injured in the crash, police said, but he was charged with reckless driving for failing to maintain proper control. According to a police statement, “Speed was a factor in the crash.”

State police responded to the accident about 5:55 a.m.The westbound lanes of I-66 and the ramp from I-495 South were closed for about three hours.

9:30 A.M. Update:

Interstate 66 West has reopened after an earlier crash, although you should be alert for closures on the right shoulder.

Interstate 66 East remains congested with delays extending from the Beltway to the Fairfax County Parkway.

8:45 A.M. Update:

The tractor trailer accident on I-66 West at the Beltway is still blocking all westbound lanes and the entrance ramp, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Traffic is being diverted from I-66 West to I-495 South to U.S. 50 East. The right exit from I-495 North is closed, and traffic can get to I-66 West from the left exit.

Debris is still blocking two lanes on southbound Old Germantown Road/MD 187 at Democracy Boulevard in Bethesda.

The traffic signals are reportedly flashing at Western Avenue and River Road in Northwest Washington.

There’s an accident on 23rd and K streets in Northwest Washington.

A disabled vehicle on New York and Florida avenues in Northeast could snarl traffic there.

8:25 A.M. Update:

There is an accident at Pennsylvania and Alabama avenues in Southeast Washington and an accident at 6th Street and Constitution Avenue in Northwest Washington.

There’s also a fire reported in the 2000 block of F Street in Northwest Washington, and you can expect that to impact traffic in the immediate vicinity.

8:10 A.M. Update:

Traffic signals are reportedly flashing at South Capitol Street and Southern Avenue in Southeast Washington.

7:45 A.M. Update:

The tractor trailer accident on I-66 West at the Beltway is now blocking all westbound lanes, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. Traffic is being diverted from I-66 West to I-495 South to U.S. 50 East. The right exit from I-495 North is closed, and traffic can get to I-66 West from the left exit.

There’s a disabled vehicle in the southbound Third Street Tunnel, so expect delays approaching that spot.

An accident on I-295 North at Malcolm X Avenue in Southeast Washington could cause traffic headaches.

7:20 A.M. Update:

Accidents at 16th Street and Kalmia Road and at 34th Street and Massachusetts Avenue, both in Northwest Washington, could cause headaches around those intersections.

There’s an accident on the outer loop of the Beltway at Baltimore Avenue. It’s blocking one of the shoulders, so there could be some related delays.

7:10 A.M. Update:

I-66 East is backed up at Chain Bridge Road.

I-395 North is also congested approaching the 14th Street Bridge and King Street.

6:50 A.M. Update:

The left two lanes remain closed on I-66 West at the Beltway.

Debris is blocking two lanes on southbound Old Germantown Road/MD 187 at Democracy Boulevard in Bethesda.

An accident on the outer loop of the Beltway at Georgia Avenue was blocking the shoulder, but it has been cleared.

6:30 A.M. Update:

The tractor trailer accident on westbound I-66 at the Beltway is now blocking the left lane, left center lane and left shoulder again. The right center lane has reopened.

6:17 A.M. Update:

Now the left lane, left center lane and right center lane are all closed on I-66 West at the Beltway. Only the right lane is getting by, so expect delays approaching this spot.

6:12 A.M. Update:

A tractor trailer accident on westbound I-66 at the Beltway is blocking the left lane, left center lane and left shoulder.

Good morning, commuters! We’re in for another day of nice weather, according to the Capital Weather Gang, with low humidity and temperatures in the mid-to-high 70s.
