Stretch of southbound South Dakota Avenue NE closed for two days

8:30 A.M. Update:

The District Department of Transportation closed Southbound South Dakota Avenue between Riggs Road and Kennedy Street in Northeast Washington at this morning at 7 a.m. The road will remain closed for 48 hours.

All southbound lanes will be closed, while one northbound lane will remain open on South Dakota Avenue.

Drivers heading east on Riggs Road will be able to get on South Dakota Avenue via the Riggs Road ramp. Westbound traffic on Riggs Road and southbound traffic on 3rd Street will be detoured to 1st Street to get to South Dakota Avenue.

This closure is so crews can speed up preparations for next week’s permanent closure of the Riggs Road ramp to South Dakota Avenue.

Meanwhile, the disabled vehicle on inbound New York Avenue NE has been cleared, according to police.

8:25 A.M. Update:

There’s another disabled vehicle blocking one lane on inbound New York Avenue NE, this time at Bladensburg Road, according to D.C. police.

8:15 A.M. Update:

The disabled vehicle on the 2500 block of New York Avenue NE has been cleared from the inbound side and all lanes are open again.

8:05 A.M. Update:

A disabled vehicle on the 2500 block of New York Avenue NE is blocking one lane on the inbound side.

8 A.M. Update:

The accident on the eastbound Dulles Connector Road before I-66 East has been cleared and the left lanes reopened. Still, heavy delays are going to linger for traffic approaching that spot.

7:50 A.M. Update:

Metro riders are reporting delays on a Blue Line train (or trains) in Virginia heading to Largo Town Center. Watch out for potential issues if you’re boarding such a train.

Metrobus riders: Southbound S2 buses are detouring at Colesville Road and East-West Highway due to police activity. They are resuming their normal routes at Georgia and Alaska avenues. Northbound S2 buses are detouring at Georgia and Eastern avenues and resuming their normal routes at Colesville Road and East-West Highway.

7:30 A.M. Update:

The accident on the eastbound Dulles Connector Road before I-66 East is still blocking the left two lanes. Expect heavy delays if you have to head that way.

7:15 A.M. Update:

The vehicle fire at Riggs Road and South Dakota Avenue NE has been cleared and Riggs Road reopened. However, that is still where southbound South Dakota Avenue is closed, so avoid the area if you can help it.

7:10 A.M. Update:

A vehicle fire at Riggs Road and South Dakota Avenue NE is closing Riggs Road in both directions. This is right near where South Dakota Avenue is closed due to construction work, so expect the surrounding area to be a nightmare.

The D.C. police are reporting a disabled vehicle on New York Avenue before Bladensburg Road NE. We don’t know what direction, but assume this will cause inbound delays.

7:05 A.M. Update:

A disabled vehicle on I-95 North just north of Occoquan is blocking the right shoulder.

A disabled vehicle on I-66 East at the Beltway is blocking the right shoulder.

6:50 A.M. Update:

The accident is on the Dulles Connector Road before I-66 East. The left two lanes remain blocked.

Metrobus riders: Westbound D3 buses will detour at North Capitol Street and Massachusetts Avenue NW due to construction. They resume the regular route at New Jersey Avenue and E Street NW.

6:30 A.M. Update:

An accident on the eastbound Dulles Toll Road near I-66 East is blocking the left two lanes.

I-95 North is very backed up approaching the Springfield Interchange.

Good morning, commuters! We’ll be keeping an eye on the roads and rails this morning, reporting any delays or issues — and we will need your help. If you hear about any congestion, delays, problems or anything at all, tell us in the comments section below or by tweeting @drgridlock.

One major thing will impact many drivers in D.C.: The District Department of Transportation is closing Southbound South Dakota Avenue between Riggs Road and Kennedy Street in Northeast Washington at 7 a.m. The road will remain closed for 48 hours.

This closure is so crews can speed up preparations for next week’s permanent closure of the Riggs Road ramp to South Dakota Avenue.

There will be signs up in the area alerting drivers. Still, this is likely to cause major issues, so avoid the immediate area around the closure if you can help it.
