Dr. Gridlock’s summer getaway guide | Advice for vacation driving

The Maryland Transportation Authority expects almost 495,000 vehicles to travel across the Bay Bridge this holiday weekend, beginning Thursday.

State officials urged travelers to plan their crossing for off-peak periods when traffic is expected to be lighter. The best times for the holiday weekend are expected to be:

• Friday: Before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m.
• Saturday: Before 7 a.m. and after 5 p.m.
• Sunday: Before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m.
• Monday: Before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m.

This week AAA reported in its annual Fourth of July survey that more than 900,000 people in the Washington area plan to drive 50 miles or more from home. More than 72,000 people are expected to fly to their destinations.
