Watching the Tuesday A.M. commute; safe driving tips for space shuttle watchers

9 A.M. Update:

The space shuttle Discovery is flying over the Washington D.C. area today between 10 and 11 a.m. The plan is for it to be flown near the National Mall, Reagan National Airport, National Harbor and the Smithsonian’s Udvar-Hazy Center as the shuttle heads to Dulles International Airport.

Plenty of you might want to head outside to watch the shuttle as it flies overhead. (If so, here are some of the best locations. And if you do head outside to check it out, send us your photos.)

AAA Mid-Atlantic reminds drivers to be safe when on the road and not to try and spot the shuttle while driving. If you want to check out the shuttle, pull over and park your car. Don’t try and snap photos or text anything while you’re driving; head to a gathering spot for that.

Also:

— The earlier accident on the inner loop of the Beltway after G.W. Parkway is still blocking the left two lanes and left shoulder. The right center lane has reopened, so the right two lanes are open and moving.

8:45 A.M. Update:

— A disabled vehicle on the inner loop of the Beltway at Barnabas Road is blocking the right shoulder and right acceleration lane.

— An accident on the inner loop of the Beltway after G.W. Parkway is blocking the left three lanes and left shoulder. Expect major delays.

— Heavy delays also remain for MARC Penn Line riders. Trains are running 10 to 20 minutes late in both directions. Metro will accept MARC tickets from New Carrollton into Washington.

8:15 A.M. Update:

All MARC Penn Line trains are running at least 10 to 20 minutes late right now, according to the Maryland Transit Administration. Metro will honor MARC tickets from New Carrollton into Washinton, so that’s one way to avoid the MARC delays.

Additionally, MARC Penn Line train 421 is running 15 to 20 minutes late and it’s one car short of the normal number. Expect heavy crowding on the remaining cars.

A disabled vehicle on I-395 North at Seminary Road is blocking the right shoulder.

8 A.M. Update:

The accident at Connecticut Avenue and Legation Street NW is blocking two northbound lanes, according to D.C. police.

7:40 A.M. Update:

The accident on the inner loop of the Beltway at the Little River Turnpike has been cleared from the northbound exit ramp. Delays remain approaching this spot.

An accident on I-95 North at the Springfield Interchange is blocking the left shoulder.

The D.C. police are responding to an accident reported at Connecticut Avenue and Legation Street NW.

7:20 A.M. Update:

Southbound MARC Penn Line trains are now running 25 to 35 minutes late due to signal problems north of the BWI station. Northbound trains could run 20 to 25 minutes behind schedule due to late equipment turning back from Washington.

7:05 A.M. Update:

An accident on the inner loop of the Beltway at the Little River Turnpike is blocking the northbound exit ramp.

7 A.M. Update:

Metro reports that normal service has resumed on the Red Line at Brookland.

MARC Penn Line riders: All southbound trains are running 12 to 15 minutes late, while northbound trains are running 10 to 12 minutes late between the Halethrope and BWI stations. This all stems from signal problems, according to the Maryland Transit Administration.

The accident on I-395 North at Edsall Road has been cleared from the left shoulder.

The DC Circulator stop at Wisconsin Avenue and 35th Street won’t be serviced due to construction at that intersection.

6:45 A.M. Update:

The accident on I-95 North in Occoquan has been cleared from right lane and right shoulder. All lanes are open, but watch for lingering delays.

6:35 A.M. Update:

The accident on I-66 East at Sully Road is still blocking the left shoulder. The three lanes that were blocked there have reopened, but heavy delays do remain for drivers approaching that spot.

6:20 A.M. Update:

Southbound MARC Penn Line trains will now run 10 to 12 minutes late between Halethrope and BWI due to the signal issue.

There are Red Line delays heading to Shady Grove due to a train malfunction at Brookland.

Original Post:

Good morning, commuters! We’ll be keeping an eye on the roads and rails this morning, reporting any delays or issues — and we will need your help. If you hear about any congestion, delays, problems or anything at all, tell us in the comments section below or by tweeting @drgridlock.

After Monday’s very summer-like temperatures, it cools down today for a nicer day with temperatures in the mid-70s, according to the Capital Weather Gang.

Today is Tax Day, but make sure to use extra caution if you’re heading to the post office tonight: A study recently found that deadly car accidents increase on Tax Day. So make sure not to rush to the post office and to be careful on the road.

So far this morning:

— A vehicle fire on eastbound U.S. 50 between I-95 and the exit for Martin Luther King Jr. Highway/MD 704 is blocking one eastbound lane and the eastbound right on-ramp.

— An accident on I-395 North at Edsall Road is blocking the left shoulder.

— An accident on I-95 North in Occoquan is blocking the right lane and right shoulder.

— An accident on I-66 East at Sully Road has been cleared and all lanes are open after multiple lanes were blocked there earlier this morning.

— Southbound MARC Penn Line trains could going to experience delays of 5 to 8 minute between Halethrope and BWI due to a signal issue.
