Northbound I-295 reopens

Update: 295 has reopened, but southbound Georgia Avenue remains closed following a water main break.

9:15 A.M. Update:

The water main break on Georgia Avenue/MD 97 is still blocking southbound lanes between Randolph Road and Arcola Avenue in Wheaton-Glenmont.

There are big, big problems on and around I-295 North due to the closure at Pennysylvania Avenue. Avoid that entire area if possible.

8:55 A.M. Update:

Travelers trying to head out of Washington via the John Philip Sousa Bridge are having a lot of trouble. On the other side of the District, commuters from Virginia are having big problems crossing the river. I-395 North is very backed up at the 14th Street Bridge, I-66 East is crawling at the Teddy Roosevelt Bridge and the northbound Key Bridge is very slow heading into Georgetown.

8:45 A.M. Update:

Update on the northbound I-295 closure: The road damage is a hole in the bridge deck on the I-295 bridge over Pennsylvania Avenue, according to the District Department of Transportation. Crews will place a plate over the hole this morning. In the meantime, expect big, big headaches approaching this spot.

8:25 A.M. Update:

Northbound I-295 is shut down at Pennsylvania Avenue due to road damage, according to the District Department of Transportation. There are big, big backups on southbound Pennylsvania Avenue approaching this spot. Avoid the area.

The northbound lanes have reopened on Georgia Avenue, while southbound lanes remain blocked due to the water main break.

8:05 A.M. Update:

Delays have worsened on the inner loop of the Beltway at Gallows Road.

7:30 A.M. Update:

All lanes have just reopened at Washington Boulevard and N. Glebe Road in Arlington, said Arlington County police spokeswoman Crystal Nosal. The intersection was shut down due to an accident early Wednesday morning involving a police officer.

Drivers can expect some residual headaches in the area, but traffic should be back to normal shortly.

Also, the lanes on northbound I-270 have reopened north of Montrose Road.

7:10 A.M. Update:

The inner loop of the Beltway is slow approaching Gallows Road.

I-95 North is pretty backed up approaching the Springfield Interchange.

7:05 A.M. Update:

The water main break is blocking Georgia Avenue/MD 97 in both directions between Randolph Road and Arcola Avenue in Wheaton-Glenmont, according to the Montgomery County Fire Department.

6:45 A.M. Update:

Two lanes on northbound I-270 are blocked north of Montrose Road by debris in the road.

6:25 A.M. Update:

The accident at Washington Boulevard and N. Glebe Road in Arlington is blocking almost the entire intersection, according to Arlington County police spokeswoman Crystal Nosal. She said that the only lane they have reopened is the lane on westbound Washington Boulevard that allows drivers to turn onto northbound Glebe Road in order to access I-66. All other lanes remain closed at this intersection.

The roadway likely won’t reopen fully until at least 8 a.m., Nosal said. She warned that this might change and cautioned drivers to avoid this intersection and use alternate routes for the rest of the morning rush.

The accident, which occurred at about 2:15 a.m. on Wednesday morning, involved a police officer and another vehicle, Nosal said. The police officer has “serious” medical issues stemming from the accident; there was one person in the other vehicle and they had minor injuries but went to the hospital as a precaution.
