Weekend delays at Telegraph Road/Beltway

This post has been updated.

Drivers are likely to encounter big delays in the Telegraph Road area this weekend as the Wilson Bridge project closes lanes and shifts traffic to accommodate work on the Telegraph Road bridge over Cameron Run and other roadway construction.

They type of work they’re planning is subject to weather delays, but if it comes off on schedule, motorists would be best off avoiding the area from Friday night through early Monday. The closings are scheduled to end in time for the Monday morning rush.

As of Monday morning, assuming the schedule holds, northbound Telegraph Road drivers will be on new asphalt just east of the old northbound lanes from Lenore Lane onto the new part of the bridge over Cameron Run. The exits to Eisenhower Avenue and the Capital Beltway’s outer loop will be reconfigured for this shift, the project managers say.

The Wilson Bridge project, which involved rebuilding four Beltway interchanges including Telegraph Road, is in its final stages, but on such a long and complex project, that still leaves more than a year of work. The reconstruction of Telegraph Road and the Beltway lanes should be substantially done by fall 2012, though some wrap-up work could continue till late spring 2013.

Here are the details of this weekend’s plan. The work is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.

The current northbound Telegraph Road lanes will be closed from Lenore Lane to the intersection with the Beltway. Northbound traffic will be shifted left onto one of the southbound lanes. One lane will remain open to northbound and southbound Telegraph Road traffic all weekend. All access between southbound Telegraph Road and adjacent streets and ramps will remain open.

The signals at Telegraph Road and Huntington Avenue, North Kings Highway, and East Drive/Lenore Lane will be turned off. Watch for police direction.

There will be no access from Telegraph Road North to the Beltway’s outer loop.

Detour to the outer loop: Drivers should continue north on Telegraph Road to Duke Street East to Route 1 to the outer loop ramp.

Detour from Huntington Avenue: Heading east on Huntington, turn left on Route 1 North to the inner loop LOCAL exit to Telegraph Road North or South.

There will be no access from Telegraph Road North to the new ramp to Eisenhower Avenue during the weekend.

Detour: Continue north on Telegraph Road to Duke Street East and turn right on Holland Lane to the traffic circle to Eisenhower Avenue.

Access from northbound Telegraph Road to Duke Street East and West will continue through the weekend, as will access from Duke Street East and West to southbound Telegraph Road.

Access will be available between North Kings Highway and Telegraph Road North and South, and between Telegraph North and South to North Kings Highway. Traffic on North Kings Highway will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

Access from the Beltway to the Telegraph Road exits will remain open.
