Wilson Bridge project revises schedule for Beltway paving near Telegraph Road

Last weekend’s bad weather pushed back the scheduled completion of paving along the Capital Beltway’s THRU and LOCAL lanes in the Alexandria area. The segment that will make the biggest difference to drivers, the outer loop paving, is now set to be done at the end of the first weekend in August.

That will have two benefits: It will end the work that has created a temporary bottleneck at the point where the LOCAL and THRU lanes split east of Springfield, and it will open up the long-time bottleneck that reduced lanes approaching Telegraph Road.

But there’s a lot of work before that. The Woodrow Wilson Bridge project this week continues to close ramps and travel lanes at the Telegraph Road/Beltway interchange, and the closings will have a significant impact on local traffic. Watch for the variable message boards with detour information.

From 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day through Thursday and from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each of those nights, and then continuously from 8 p.m. Friday till 5 a.m. Monday, the ramps from Telegraph Road to the outer loop LOCAL section will be closed.

From 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night through Wednesday and from 8 p.m. Friday through 8 a.m. Saturday, the outer loop LOCAL lane approaching the Eisenhower Connector will be diverted to the exit ramp to the Eisenhower Connector and routed back up the entrance ramp to merge back with the outer loop LOCAL lane. This also requires closing and detouring the bike and pedestrian traffic heading for the Eisenhower Connector from Claremont Drive. The passage through the sound wall to the ramp will be blocked.

From 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights, the ramp from the outer loop to Telegraph North/Duke Street will be closed, as will the ramps from the inner loop to Pershing Avenue and to Telegraph Road North/Duke Street.

From 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights, the left THRU lane on the outer loop will be closed from the Eisenhower Connector to Telegraph Road. This will leave one THRU lane open in the area. Traffic will be completely stopped for 15 minutes at least once just after midnight each night.

From 11 p.m Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday, the two left lanes of the outer loop will be closed between the Springfield interchange and Van Dorn Street. Traffic will be completely stopped for 15 minutes periodically after midnight.

From 8 p.m. Friday till 8 a.m. Saturday, the ramp from Telegraph Road South to the inner loop will be closed .

From 9 p.m. Friday till 8 p.m. Saturday, the right outer loop THRU lane will be closed to pave the adjacent travel lane. This will leave one THRU lane open in the area.

From 9 p.m. Friday till 5 a.m. Monday, Telegraph Road will be completely closed between the Beltway and Duke Street for construction on the bridge over the railroad tracks. (This is going to interrupt Metro’s Blue Line service this weekend.) The ramps from Duke Street to Telegraph Road South also will be closed.

From 7 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday, access from the outer loop LOCAL lane to southbound Telegraph Road, North Kings Highway and Huntington Avenue will be blocked.
