Amtrak resumes full service between D.C. and Delaware

October 9, 2012

12:55 P.M. Update:

Amtrak resumed full service between Washington and Wilmington, Del. at about 12:15 p.m., said Amtrak spokeswoman Danelle Hunter.

Trains will face some delays because they are traveling more slowly through the area south of Aberdeen, where workers continue to make repairs to the downed wires, she said. Two of the three tracks in that area have reopened, Hunter said.

MARC service on the Penn Line also has resumed to Perryville, a MARC spokesman said. Earlier trains were beginning and terminating at Edgewood. Morning MARC trains did not serve the Aberdeen or Perryville stations, which affected about 400 passengers, said spokesman Terry Owens.

Hunter said Amtrak is still investigating what caused the overhead power lines to come down at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. Some Amtrak trains were canceled between Wilmington and Washington on Tuesday morning, while others faced delays of 30 to 90 minutes, she said.

12 P.M. Update:

Amtrak resumed partial service between Washington and Wilmington about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, but trains face significant delays, a spokeswoman said. Amtrak passengers traveling this afternoon or evening should call 1-800-USA-RAIL or check the Amtrak web site for their train’s schedule, said Amtrak spokeswoman Danelle Hunter.

Trains are running at regular speed on two of three tracks in the area where the overhead power wires are down south of Aberdeen, Hunter said.

Amtrak is still investigating why the wires came down around 2:30 a.m., she said. As of 11:30 a.m., she said, crews were still working on repairs.

10 A.M. Update:

Amtrak reports that partial service has been restored between Washington and Wilmington. One track has been reopened and trains can now travel in both directions.

Riders should expect to encounter delays due to trains having to share the same track. There is no timetable available yet for when the rest of the work removing the downed wires will be finished.

Riders who had their travel interrupted due to the issues on Tuesday morning can receive a refund or a voucher for a trip in the future, according to Amtrak.

Earlier:

Downed wires have halted Amtrak service between Washington and Delaware, while the resulting power outage has also canceled MARC service north of the Edgewood station.

Amtrak service is suspended between Washington and Wilmington due to downed wires south of Aberdeen. There’s no timetable yet for when that service will be restored, said Steve Kulm, a spokesman for Amtrak.

Southbound Acela trains run to Wilmington before turning back and heading north, while southbound Northeast Regional trains run to Philadelphia before turning around.

MARC trains are not servicing the Aberdeen and Perryville stations due to a power outage stemming from the downed wires. MARC trains continue running south from Edgewood through the rest of the system.

We’ll have the latest updates in our morning liveblog.
