DDOT map shows detour for soccer fans leaving Saturday’s D.C. United game at RFK Stadium

Reconstruction of the eastern side of the Southeast-Southwest Freeway affects a route normally used by soccer fans who park for D.C. United games at RFK Stadium. The District Department of Transportation has some advice for those attending the 7:30 p.m. Saturday game against the Columbus Crew.

On the way to RFK’s Lot 8, continue to follow northbound I-395 to the Southeast-Southwest Freeway. But the exit route will be different, because access from the parking lot to the freeway has been shut.

So drivers heading west, toward the 14th Street Bridge and Virginia, will be directed from Lot 8 onto Independence Avenue SE, then east along East Capitol Street SE and across the Whitney Young Memorial Bridge to southbound D.C. 295 (Anacostia Freeway). Then they can take the new ramp from southbound 295 to the 11th Street Bridge, back across the Anacostia River and over to southbound I-395.

By the start of next year, that entire east section of the Southeast-Southwest Freeway near RFK will be shut for the reconstruction. The District is converting the freeway segment into a boulevard. The shutdown will continue for a year and a half or more while the roadway is raised about 20 feet.

See more details on this portion of the 11th Street Bridge project.
