Crashes snarl inner loop of Beltway in Virginia

December 4, 2012

5:56 P.M. Update:

The ramp from the inner loop of the Beltway to the southbound H.O.V. lanes on I-95 has reopened.

5:20 P.M. Update:

Heavy delays remain on the inner loop of the Beltway in Virginia following two crashes, one of them fatal, that blocked several lanes on Tuesday afternoon. As the afternoon and evening commute gets underway, drivers should expect to encounter delays traveling on the Beltway near the Springfield Interchange.

One person was killed in an accident involving a box truck on the inner loop of the Beltway at Braddock Road, according to the Virginia State Police. That crash came shortly after a tractor-trailer overturned on the ramp from the inner loop of the Beltway to the southbound H.O.V. lanes on I-95. The tractor-trailer wound up leaning onto the jersey wall on the side of the ramp, spilling debris onto the lanes below, adding to delays.

Traffic remains very slow for drivers trying to take the inner loop to southbound I-95. In addition, southbound I-395 is very heavy approaching the Springfield Interchange.

The inner loop of the Beltway is also heavily jammed approaching the Braddock Road exit. The right lane and right shoulder remain closed, creating backups from the Springfield Interchange to Braddock Road.

3:55 P.M. Update:

The Virginia State Police have released some information on both accidents:

  • The crash on the inner loop of the Beltway at the Springfield Interchange occurred at 2:20 p.m. It involved a tractor-trailer that overturned on the ramp to the southbound I-95 H.O.V. lanes. There were no injuries in this crash, and two lanes on the ramp reopened at 3:44 p.m., police say.
  • The accident in the inner loop of the Beltway at Braddock Road occurred at 2:30 p.m. This fatal accident, which was unrelated to the first accident, involved a box truck. One person is confirmed dead, according to police. The two right lanes remain closed.

3:49 P.M. Update:

The accident on the inner loop of the Beltway at the Springfield Interchange is still blocking the right two lanes and right shoulder. This crash is creating massive delays, so expect big problems heading this way.

The crash on the inner loop of the Beltway near Braddock Road is still blocking the right outside lane and the right shoulder. The other lanes appear to have reopened there, but delays remain.

Original Post:

An accident involving an overturned tractor trailer is snarling traffic on the inner loop of the Beltway at the Springfield Interchange.

The vehicle overturned on the ramp from the inner loop to the southbound H.O.V. lanes on I-95 South, according to Fairfax County. The county sent out an alert saying that the tractor trailer is leaning on the jersey wall on the ramp, spilling debris onto the inner loop lanes.

The ramp is blocked, as are the inner loop lanes. Traffic is getting by on the left shoulder, which should lead to massive delays approaching this spot.

There is also another crash reported on the inner loop of the Beltway before Braddock Road. This crash is blocking multiple lanes, with traffic only getting by on the left lanes.
