The weekend and beyond: Metro delays, FedEx football, parkway projects

Metro plans weekend work that will disrupt service on all five lines. (Bonnie Jo Mount/The Washington Post)

There’s some road work around the D.C. region this weekend, but the major source of travel delays is likely to be Metro’s very extensive maintenance program. The Capital Weather Gang is a bit gloomy about the weekend forecast: “Not very pretty at all,” is the gang’s outlook for Saturday and Sunday, though day temperatures will be on the mild side.

Metro weekend delays

The maintenance program will affect all Metrorail lines from 10 p.m. Friday through the system’s midnight closing Sunday.

Red Line: Free shuttle buses will replace trains between Glenmont and Fort Totten. The Takoma, Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton and Glenmont stations will be closed. Trains will operate operate about every 10 minutes between Fort Totten and Shady Grove from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and every 15 minutes at other times, Metro said. Add about an hour to normal travel time if taking the shuttle bus through the entire work zone.

Green Line: Buses will replace trains between Archives and Waterfront. No Green Line service at L’Enfant Plaza. Trains will operate about every 10 minutes between Greenbelt and Archives from 9 a.m. to 9 pm. Saturday and Sunday. Between Waterfront and Branch Avenue, they will operate on a normal weekend schedule. If using the shuttle buses, add about 20 minutes to normal travel time.

The last train from Greenbelt to Archives will operate 20 minutes earlier than normal on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

Yellow Line: No service between Fort Totten and Archives this weekend. Yellow Line trains will operate via the Blue Line route between Huntington and Eastern Market. At L’Enfant Plaza, the weekend Yellow Line trains will arrive on the lower level.

Orange Line: Trains will share a track between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly. They will operate about every 24 minutes, but add about 15 minutes to normal travel time through the work zone.

Blue Line: Trains will share a track between Stadium-Armory and Addison Road. They will operate about every 24 minutes between Franconia-Springfield and Largo Town Center. But add about 15 minutes to normal travel time through the work zone.

Because the Yellow Line trains will be shifted over to run on the portion of the Blue Line between King Street and Eastern Market, trains will be more frequent in that zone.

Beltway/Telegraph Road

The Woodrow Wilson Bridge project has scheduled a lot of weekend work for the Capital Beltway’s Telegraph Road interchange, the final phase of the project. It would be best to avoid the traffic congestion in that area this weekend. Here are details on the work.

From 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday and then again overnight Saturday, Telegraph Road South and the ramps from Duke Street East and West to Telegraph Road South will be closed.

From 8 p.m. Friday through 9 a.m. Sunday, North Kings Highway is scheduled to close between Kathryn Street and Telegraph Road. The outer loop exit to North Kings Street also will be closed.

From 9 p.m. Friday through 9 a.m. Sunday, Telegraph Road North will be closed from the Beltway to Duke Street. The ramps from Telegraph Road North to the Beltway also will be closed, as will the ramps from the Beltway to Telegraph Road North

Access from Pershing Avenue West to Telegraph Road North will be blocked. At about 9 p.m. Saturday, drivers will encounter a new traffic pattern on the Telegraph Road bridge over the railroad tracks.

Redskins-Ravens at FedEx Field

Kickoff at FedEx Field is at 1 p.m. Sunday. Drivers should not encounter any highway roadwork to slow them down in Maryland, but see all that Metrorail maintenance work listed above.

Because the visiting team is from Baltimore, look for a higher than normal portion of the game traffic heading south on Interstate 95. Also, there may be more fans who are unfamiliar with the approaches to FedEx and the parking setup. It’s always a good idea to get there early, but it may be an especially good idea this Sunday.

The FedEx parking areas open four hours before game time, and the stadium opens two hours before games. Before and after stadium events, traffic surges on Landover Road, Central Avenue, Baltimore-Washington Parkway, Southeast-Southwest Freeway, Interstate 295/D.C. 295 and the eastern side of the Capital Beltway.

Drivers who park at the Morgan Boulevard or Largo Town Center Metro stations to go to FedEx must pay $25 with a SmarTrip card. The reusable cards cost $5. The premium fee for parking is in effect from three hours before the game until two hours afterward. Metro doesn’t allow tailgating in its parking areas

Jingle All the Way Race

The Jingle All The Way 8K Race, scheduled for 9 to 11 a.m. Sunday in the District, will close streets from 4 a.m. to noon along the route, which is as follows: East on Pennsylvania Avenue NW to Constitution Avenue NW, east on Constitution to Louisiana Avenue NW, northeast on Louisiana to D Street NW, east on D Street to Delaware Avenue NE, north on First Street NE to Columbus Circle NE in front of Union Station, south on First Street NE to the parking lot, north on First Street to D Street NE, west on D Street to Third Street NW, south on Third Street to Independence Avenue SW, east on Independence to Washington Avenue, southeast on Washington Avenue SW to Second Street SW, south on Second Street to E Street SW, west on E Street to Third Street SW, north on E Street to Third Street, north on Third Street to Independence Avenue, west on Independence to Seventh Street SW, east on Independence Avenue to Third Street, north on Third Street to Independence Avenue, west on Independence Avenue to Seventh Street, east on Independence to Third Street, north on Third Street to Independence Avenue, north on Third Street to Pennsylvania Avenue, west on Pennsylvania Avenue to 12th Street, where the race ends.

North Capitol Street restriction

One northbound far-right lane in the 5200 block of North Capitol St. NE is scheduled to close Friday after the evening rush while workers install a new concrete bus pad. The lane is scheduled to reopen in time for the Monday morning rush.

George Washington Parkway

The National Park Service announced that the rock stabilization project along the northbound side of the George Washington Parkway in Rosslyn is done. All lanes are open between the Key Bridge and Spout Run.

Arlington Memorial Bridge

The National Park Service says it is almost done with the repairs that have closed lanes on the Arlington Memorial Bridge. This coming week, drivers may encounter some temporary lane closings on both sides of the bridge as the project goes through its final punch list items.

Rock Creek Parkway

The rehabilitation project on Rock Creek Parkway continues at Waterside Drive. The traffic pattern through the work zone is entering a new configuration Friday that will remain until mid-February.

Dulles Metrorail project

Drivers are most likely to encounter delays for construction of the Dulles Metrorail line when they travel on Route 7 in Tysons during the day. But there is overnight work scheduled for this weekend

Southbound Route 123 will be fully closed between Great Falls Street and Anderson Road from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday. The ramps from the eastbound and westbound Dulles Toll Road (Route 267) onto southbound Route 123 will be closed during the same hours.

Two left lanes of westbound Route 7 between Route 123 and Frontage Road will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday.
