Christmas and New Year’s transit, transportation changes

December 21, 2012

The holiday season is here, which means plenty of people are leaving town for the coming days or even weeks. If you are heading out of town, make sure to read our holiday getaway guide and watch our getaway video.

But if you are staying in the Washington area, you need to know about some transit and transportation changes. Here’s what you need to know for getting around on Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

(Note: Some transit agencies only provided information for some of those days. We have included all the information available as of Friday, Dec. 21. Some of these plans could change; stay with PostLocal.com for the latest updates.)

This post has been updated.

TRANSIT

Metro

Christmas Eve (Dec. 24): Regular weekday service; rail system open 5 a.m. to midnight.

Christmas Day (Dec. 25): Metrorail/Metrobus on a Sunday schedule; rail system open 7 a.m. until midnight; MetroAccess subscriptions canceled.

New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31): Regular weekday service; rail system is open two hours late (until 2 a.m.); last train times will vary, so just add two hours to the normal weekday last train times.

New Year’s Day (Jan. 1): Metrorail/Metrobus on a Sunday schedule; rail system open 7 a.m. until midnight; MetroAccess subscriptions canceled.

NOTE: As Dr. Gridlock has noted, Metro has suspended major track work for the weekends before Christmas and New Year’s. (There will still be work — Green Line trains will singe-track between Greenbelt and College Park on these weekends — but there won’t be numerous station closures and major work-related delays across the system.)

MARC

Christmas Eve (Dec. 24): The Penn and Brunswick Lines will run on an “S” schedule. Only trains with an “S” under their train number in the timetables will operate. (Some trains will make extra stops as noted in the timetables.) There will be no service on the Camden Line, but Camden Line tickets will be honored on the Penn Line.

Christmas Day (Dec. 25): No MARC service. (Penn Line riders: Amtrak doesn’t honor MARC weekly and monthly tickets on weekdays with no MARC service.)

New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31): The Penn and Brunswick Lines will run on an “S” schedule. Only trains with an “S” under their train number in the timetables will operate. (Some trains will make extra stops as noted in the timetables.) There will be no service on the Camden Line, but Camden Line tickets will be honored on the Penn Line.

New Year’s Day (Jan. 1): No MARC service. (Penn Line riders: Amtrak doesn’t honor MARC weekly and monthly tickets on weekdays with no MARC service.)

NOTE: On Friday, Dec. 28, full MARC service will run on all three lines. But Penn Line train 640 will be canceled, Camden Line 852 will be canceled and Brunswick Line train 879 will be canceled. Read the full list of adjustments here.
